Plain collects nothing.

Plain is a free audio, podcast and read-aloud player for iPhone and Apple Watch, made by Revelis Labs LLC. This page says what it does with your data, in plain words.

What we collect

Nothing. Plain has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party SDKs. We run no servers for Plain, so we never receive your files, your podcast subscriptions, your notes, your voice recordings or how you use the app.

This matches the App Store privacy label for Plain: Data Not Collected.

What stays on your devices

Your audio files, imported documents, the audio Plain makes from them, podcast subscriptions, listening positions, bookmarks, notes and voice recordings are stored in Plain's own storage on your iPhone and Apple Watch. Plain does not sync them through iCloud or anything else. Deleting the app deletes them.

When Plain uses the network

Only because you asked it to:

  • Podcast search. When you tap Search, the words you typed are sent to Apple's public iTunes Search service. Apple's privacy policy covers that request.
  • Podcasts you add. When you add, refresh or play a podcast, Plain requests that podcast's public feed, its artwork and its episode files from the servers its publisher chose. Those servers can see an ordinary web request, including your IP address, as with any podcast app. Plain can also check your subscribed feeds for new episodes in the background; you can turn that off on the Podcasts screen. Episodes download only when you tap Download.
  • Sending to your watch. Podcast episodes are downloaded by the watch itself over its Wi-Fi. Other files travel from your iPhone to your Apple Watch through Apple's Watch Connectivity, or over a short-lived, password-protected connection on your own Wi-Fi network between your two devices. The watch also tells your iPhone what it is holding and where you stopped listening. None of it goes through us.

These requests use sessions that keep no cookies, no cache and no credentials, and Plain adds no account, identifier or token to them.

Processing that happens on your device

  • Reading documents aloud. Markdown, text, RTF and PDF files, or text you paste, are turned into audio on your iPhone with the voices installed there. The text is not sent anywhere.
  • Voice notes. If you allow speech recognition, Plain turns a note into text on your iPhone using on-device recognition only. If your iPhone has no on-device model for your language, the note is saved without a transcript instead of being sent away.
  • Spotlight and Siri. Plain lists your files for Spotlight search and Siri on your iPhone only.

Permissions Plain may ask for

  • Microphone. Used only while you hold the Hold to note button, to record a voice note. Notes never leave your phone.
  • Speech recognition. To turn your voice notes into text on your phone. iOS shows its own standard sentence in this prompt; Plain's code requires on-device recognition and never falls back to a server.
  • Personal Voice. Optional. Lets Plain read your documents aloud in your own Personal Voice. The voice stays on your phone.
  • Local network. Lets Plain send a file straight to your Apple Watch over your own Wi-Fi. Nothing leaves your home network.

You can decline any of these. Plain keeps working, without the feature that needs it.

Sharing

Plain does not share your data with anyone because it does not have it. If you use the Share button on your notes, iOS sends them to the app or person you choose, and that is up to you.

Children

Plain collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this ever changes, we will update this page and the App Store privacy details before releasing the change. The effective date at the top will change with it.
