What is Plain?

A free audio player for iPhone and Apple Watch. It plays podcasts and your own audio files, reads documents aloud, lets you hold a button to leave a voice note or bookmark while you listen, and sends audio to your watch so you can leave your phone behind. No account, no ads, no tracking.

How do I add my own audio files?

Any of these works: in Files, tap Share on a file and choose Plain; in Plain tap + then Add files; or drop files into Files > On My iPhone > Plain. Plain imports them into your library.

How do I add a podcast?

In Plain tap + and choose Podcasts. You can search Apple's public podcast directory, paste a podcast's feed address, or import an OPML file. Tap an episode to stream it, or tap Download to keep it. Nothing downloads on its own.

How do I have Plain read something aloud?

Add a Markdown, text, RTF or PDF file the same way as audio, or tap + then Listen to pasted text. After a short Preparing to listen step it appears in your library as normal audio, with a section for each heading and a Read along view that highlights the sentence being spoken. Only PDFs that contain text work; scanned image PDFs are not read.

Can I change the reading voice?

Yes. Open Settings (the gear) > Reading voice. Plain uses the best voice installed on your iPhone. For more natural voices, download a Premium or Enhanced voice in iOS Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Voices, then use Read again on a document.

How do I send something to my Apple Watch?

You need a paired Apple Watch with Plain installed. In Plain on your iPhone, swipe a library item or long-press it and choose Send to watch (episodes have the same option on the show page). The Watch tab shows what is queued, sending and on your watch, and lets you remove items. Podcast episodes are downloaded by the watch over its Wi-Fi; your own files are sent from your iPhone and a large one can take a couple of minutes. On the watch, open Plain and tap the item. Audio keeps playing when you lower your wrist.

How do voice notes and bookmarks work?

While something is playing, hold the Hold to note button to record a voice note, or tap it quickly for a bookmark. Notes are tagged to that moment. With speech recognition allowed, voice notes are turned into text on your phone.

What does Plain do with my data?

Nothing leaves your device except the requests you ask for. See the privacy policy.

How do I delete my data?

Everything Plain stores is on your devices. Delete an item in the app to remove it, or delete the app to remove all of it.

Can I use Siri with Plain?

Yes. Say the app name in the phrase, for example Resume Plain, Pause Plain, Skip forward in Plain or Add a note in Plain. The same actions are in the Shortcuts app.
